Verses 11-19

Key points:

1. Originating of creation belongs to Allah Almighty only – we can only create from ‘raw’ materials!

2. The believers are promised extreme joy, happiness, and delight in paradise – work for the life!

3. “Glory be to God” is an infinitive which means to declare (God) free from all defects – God is infinitely perfect cannot in any way be compared to His creation.

4. Only God can give life and bring death: Nature and plant coming back to life every spring as a metaphor

5. Remembrance of God can be general (e.g. dhikr) and more specifically Salaah

6. The verse (17-18) alludes towards the five times daily prayers

7. Verse 17-19 is a dhikr of Ibrahim (AS) for which he was granted the title of the one who ‘fulfilled his covenant’

وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ الَّذِي وَفَّىٰ – 53:37

Abu Dawud, Tabarani, and Ibn Sunni from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet PBUH stated that anyone who recites the following verses

In the morning, all shortcomings in his acts during the day will be repaired; and whoever will recite them in the evening all shortcomings in his actions during the nights will be repaired (Ruh al-Ma’ani).

Verses 20-27

Key points:

The Signs of Divine Omnipotence (the quality of having unlimited power – all powerful)

1. God creating human beings from dust. This should humble us.

2. God created for human beings mates from among yourselves. He has extended His own Love and Mercy to them through the love they manifest toward one another.

The Prophet PBUH is reported to have said: “The believer whose faith is most complete is the one whose character is best; and the best among you are those who are best to their wives”

3. Creation of the heavens and the earth and the variation in the tongue and colours. Good to have variety – don’t be monotonous!

4. Human sleep and economic activities both in daytime and at night – Islam also encourages us to go out and learn a living. Hardwork, dedication but also plenty of rest!

5. Resurrection – and that even after destruction there will always be something good to follow: lightning is terrifying but it brings with it rain which allows vegetation to grow. Always look on the bright side of life!

6. The sum of all the five signs above. And everything is subservient to God, He is the originator and for him to resurrect everything is most easy for Him. Nothing is like God.

Verse 28 to 40

Main points:

1. Submit wholeheartedly to God and do not become ‘groups’’

2. God provides our sustenance – He is our Sustainer

3. Fulfilling the rights of relatives and those who are weaker than us. This points to the quality of sympathy and selflessness. Being greedy and selfish will not benefit us and this is what the Prophets came to remove from our hearts. Reconcile with people. This is a test from God.

4. Maintaining bonds of mutual compassion is paramount. Fighting the ego will draw us closer to God.

5. Earliest mention of usury (riba) in the chronological order of the Qur’an. This was a correction of an evil custom, where loans would be expounded exponentially to the point of leaving the borrower in complete ruin. Islam is all about protecting the weak, serving justice and fighting against exploitation.

6. Give gifts to people but don’t expect something better or of a higher value back. The one receiving the gift, should, however give something back. It creates love.
